The Women of Bioscience
The Women of Bioscience organization
was formed in 1997 to promote a collegial environment and facilitate
networking amongst the women employed in the San Diego biomedical
sciences community. The events are open to any women members
of our biomedical community (pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical
devices, diagnostics). The happy hour gatherings are entirely
dedicated to social interaction/personal networking and do not
involve speaker presentations. Womens' organizations (AWIS, Athena,
etc.) are invited to promote their upcoming events and attendees
are encouraged to announce current job opportunities. Sponsors
provide literature and present their services to the group before
the gift raffle.
Over the past few years, the Women of Bioscience has flourished
from an initial ten women in attendance to over one hundred per
event. Costs for the happy hours are supported entirely
by service provider sponsors.
Meetings
The Women of Bioscience Happy Hours are held once every other
month, usually on a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 5:30 pm
- 8:00 pm, at the La Jolla El Torito at 8910
Villa La Jolla, La Jolla, CA 92037. The happy hours
involve no speaker, as they are truly a social gathering to promote
networking amongst female biomedical colleagues. Gift raffles
are held at 7:00pm and, as with the appetizers and beverages,
are graciously provided by the event sponsor. There is
no fee for the events or membership, as the biomedical service
providers financially support all Women of Bioscience expenses.
Demographics of the Attendees
Attendees include senior management, R&D scientists, clinical
scientists, quality and regulatory personnel, business professionals,
and others employed by local for-profit and non-profit biomedical
organizations. The group is very diversified with reference
to employers and areas of scientific expertise. The events
are highly anticipated and attendance is regularly over one hundred
in number. Currently, the email notification list contains
over 500 members.
